Girne or Iskele: a big city or a quiet coast

This site lists flats in both places, but comparing them is not quite fair. Girne (also known as Kyrenia) is historically a port and a centre of trade. It faces Turkey, there is a ferry to Turkey from there, and so more has always been going on. Together with its suburbs such as Çatalköy, it is one big city full of life. Iskele is a long coast of residential complexes and private houses, and the official centre is just a village; the port of Famagusta is close by, but life here is quieter. So there is nothing to rank: you choose the kind of life you want. One disclosure: I lived for seven years at Long Beach, in Iskele, so I know that side better.

What “Iskele” means here

The administrative division is complicated, and officially the Iskele district stretches as far as Karpaz. In everyday talk, and in this article, Iskele means a smaller area: Otüken, Yeni Iskele, Bahçeler and Long Beach, which is also called Mackenzie. The same area is also called Trikomo, its Greek name, and some services and maps use that, just as some use Kyrenia for Girne. If you search for flats, search under both names.

The coast and the city

Each residential complex in Iskele is in effect a small town of its own, with its own shop, beauty salon and bar. This is the main difference from Girne, where everything joins into one big city with dense buildings. Iskele is quiet and has less of an urban life: more people come here for the season, while Girne, the centre of trade and business, is alive all year. Some people are bored to death in Iskele, but things are changing, and casino hotels have appeared, such as Grand Sapphire.

The sea is close, and you walk to it. On this site, the Royal Sun flat at Long Beach is 651 metres from the sea, the Sea Pearl villa in Bahçeler is 350 metres, and La Isla in Otüken is about 700 metres, according to the developer. Girne stands on the sea too, with its harbour and castle, but on foot you have to make an effort to get to the beach.

Cyprus is really small, but the two coasts are completely different. Between them the road runs through green villages, Kaplıca, Tatlısu and Esentepe, along the Beşparmak mountains. Long Beach lies outside that wall, and it is drier and sandier.

Shopping, and the city nearby

Girne is the real unofficial capital of the north: big shopping centres, discount supermarkets, brand shops, and a huge Mr. Pound. In Iskele everyday things are all there. But for big purchases, such as clothes for the whole family, bicycles or home appliances, you go “to the city”, to Famagusta, Girne or Lefkoşa. For many people this is a conscious choice: they live in Iskele for the sea, and they drive to town when they need to buy something big.

Famagusta is very close: the City Mall is about fifteen kilometres from Long Beach. Girne is farther, about seventy kilometres from Royal Sun to Kyrenia Castle, and that drive at the weekend is a good outing in itself: you walk along the harbour, and then you come back to the quiet coast, where there is only one traffic light. In Famagusta there are two or three.

Who Girne is for

Girne is the city, and some people need a city: the old harbour with its restaurants and bars, resort hotels, casinos, universities and schools, and busier nights than in Iskele. The Coliseum Court flat on this site is a good example for a family: a quiet street, close to the centre of the town. If what you miss about Moscow or any big city is clubs, bars and something open at midnight, Girne is closer to that than Iskele is.

How to choose

Four questions are more useful than any ranking:

  1. Do you have a car? Without one, in a residential complex, your world is one small area.
  2. Do you want the beach under your window, or a city around you?
  3. Do you have children or students to think of? Iskele, and Long Beach in particular, is more of a holiday area, and in winter it is much emptier. Girne and Famagusta have universities and schools, and life there goes on all year. Look at where the school or university is, and measure the drive from the flat.
  4. Are you here all year? In winter some of the kiosks along the beach close, because there are few tourists. Everything else stays open, but it is quieter.

There is no correct answer. I chose Iskele and would choose it again, but that only means I am not someone who needs a city.

The flats on this site: one in Kyrenia, and in Iskele La Isla in Otüken, Royal Sun at Long Beach and the Sea Pearl villa in Bahçeler. For the weather, see the climate article. For a general picture of the island, see About North Cyprus.
